Michigan Television and PBS in digital picture and sound

Michigan Television began transmitting a digital television signal in June, 2004. The new service represents the next step in the evolution of television, from the analog service available for more than 50 years, to a digital transmission system capable of delivering crystal clear picture, home theater sound and multiple programs simultaneously. Digital broadcasting allows Michigan Television to offer improved picture and sound quality and additional channels.

Why are we changing?

We're required to. The Federal Communications Commission, which regulates broadcasting in the U.S., has mandated that all TV stations transition to digital broadcasting.

When will this change happen?

While the national DTV transition will be on February 17, 2009, Michigan Television made the transition earlier….on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, due to changes we needed to make to our transmitter. That means that Michigan Television is now exclusively broadcasting in digital format, known as DTV.

Will I be able to continue to use my current television?

If you subscribe to cable or satellite, or have a digital television, you don't have to do anything. However, if you currently rely on over-the-air signals via an older analog television and an antenna ("rabbit ears"), you will need to act to continue to receive Michigan Television. You must either:

-Purchase a low-cost converter box to use with your existing analog television

-Purchase a digital television that can receive DTV signals

-Subscribe to cable or satellite

What is Michigan Television offering on digital TV?

Michigan Television currently is offering two different digital program streams.

Michigan Television HD (DTV Channel 28.1): This is our regular programming but in digital quality, featuring children's programs, and long-time favorites like "NOVA" and "American Experience." It is Michigan Television as you've always known it, but transmitted in a high definition and widescreen format.

Michigan Television Create channel (DTV Channel 28.2): This channel features the best of public television’s cooking, arts & crafts, gardening, home improvement, and travel programs. Tune in and be inspired to taste, grow, imagine, explore and live more fully.

What else will Michigan Television be able to do with digital?

We have a number of options. As the service grows and funding is available, we might be able to expand to offer three or four different programs at the same time. It could mean special channels devoted to lifelong learning, children's programs, or news and public affairs.
